Embracing the Squish – An Interview with George McCauley

Editorial note: This is the fifth interview in the "Embracing the Squish" series by Hamish Jackson for Studio Potter. In this series, Hamish speaks with ceramic artists whose pots seem to defy the finality of the firing process – works that hold onto the softness, the movement, and the vulnerability of wet clay. These are pots that remember the hand, the squeeze, the gesture.

 

Hamish's conversations explore how these artists use clay’s most tactile qualities to express feeling, form, and meaning. From pinched mugs to slumped jars, these pots carry a sense of immediacy, even playfulness – a kind of looseness that invites both curiosity and comfort.

Author Bio

Hamish Jackson

Hamish Jackson is an English potter living in Cornwall, United Kingdom. Halfway through his undergraduate degree in literature, he attended a pottery class and realized he wanted to be a potter. Hamish started pursuing the craft working at Winchcombe Pottery, then completed a four-year apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt in North Carolina. Post apprenticeship he did several residencies before earning an MFA from Utah State University. Hamish has traveled and exhibited widely, from Europe to the United States to Asia. He currently works at the Leach Pottery. Focusing on local materials, he seeks to make pots that people love to use. He is also a tea enthusiast. Read more from Hamish on his blog and Instagram.
