Pots For Membership

February 2018
Feb 8, 2018

Introducing our February Pots for Membership program!

Did you miss us? We took January off from our usual PFM programming, but now we're back and ready to introduce yet another fabulous group of participating artists! Treat your loved one to a special piece of handmade ceramics this Valentines Day, and the artist, too, will be gifted with a subscription to Studio Potter journal—a gift that keeps on giving.

Each month, Studio Potter features a small selection of artists and their work, which is available for sale in our online store for thirty days only. Check out this month's pots on our online store. In exchange for the sale of their work, each artist or a chosen beneficiary will receive a one-year membership to the journal. Here are the February artists:

Cheyenne Mallo Cheyenne Mallo, 2018

Cheyenne Mallo was born in Thorp, Wisconsin in 1985.  She received her B.F.A. in printmaking with a minor in ceramics from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 2010. Cheyenne currently works for the Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York, and teaches ceramics classes throughout the Hudson Valley. She has continued her studio practice making functional ceramics, and has exhibited her work nationally.

I grew up in a rural community in central Wisconsin, which defined my character. Early on, I learned to appreciate, respect, and admire the landscape through exploring.  Since moving to New York's Hudson Valley in 2011, the challenge of hiking the Catskill Mountains has become a focal point for my work in ceramics. In my recent Map series, topographic imagery captures the playfulness and adventure of my recent outdoor explorations.

Jake Boggs JakeBoggs

Jake is currently a lecturer at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa where he earned his M.F.A in 2016. Prior to his move to Hawai’i, he lived in the Appalachian region of Kentucky and studied ceramics at Eastern Kentucky University, where he received his B.F.A in 2013.

In making art, Jake is focused on the ceramic vessel. He uses elements of form, function, and design to create unique compositions in clay, and experiments endlessly with variables in a fixed system of ceramic materials. He is interested in the relationships of tradition and innovation, of the handmade and the mass-produced; and how contemporary ceramics relates to production and consumption globally. He subtly questions these binaries in producing pleasurable objects meant for use in daily life.

Sunshine CobbSunshineCobb

Sunshine Cobb graduated with a B.A. in studio art from California State University at Sacramento in 2004. In 2010, she received her M.F.A. in Ceramics from Utah State University. She exhibits her work nationally and internationally, and gives lectures and workshops across the country. She has been named an Emerging Artist by both Ceramics Monthly and NCECA.

I want my work in clay to represent growth and accomplishment, in which reminiscence and nostalgia play roles. I create a sense of motion and age through texture and color in my work. By exploring and creating vessels that are kept within arms reach, I aim to communicate how an object’s significance can grow and change throughout a person’s life, and how the relationship between function and ornament shift over the course of a day/week/year.

She studied abroad at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Institute while earning her B.F.A. from West Virginia University in 1997. Jerilyn completed a two year assistantship at the studio of Silvie Granatelli, in Floyd, Virginia, before earning her M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University in 2001. She received a North Carolina Arts Fellowship Grant in 2006, and the Society of Arts and Crafts Artist Award in 2014. The snow is lazily falling outside my studio windows, while I listen to Toshiko Takaezu talk about the first time she saw snow in 1951. There is something thoughtful and candid about the way she tells her story. She acknowledges this by saying several times, "I don't know why I’m telling you all... Read More

Amid darkness and death and the worst things human beings can do to each other, ceramists can also see the light, cultivate the beauty, and feel the wonder and majesty of humanity. We can experience two truths. The stoic philosopher Epictetus would say “Everything has two handles, the... Read More

This is going to be an uncomfortable conversation.
